My Project
I think I have worked well on this project and I have achieved all that my original project plan had on it. All my pieces I have made myself from different coloured sheets of Perspex acrylic. I had to learn how to use the Scroll saw effectively, asking the assistance of Mr. Greenwood. He showed me how to get a near straight line and to cut my plastic safely. Safety goggles are essential as the machine will fire the cut bits of plastic back at you.
I also had to become accustomed to another new tool, the buffer. I had to put some brown wax onto rotating circles of strong bristles, turn the machine on and let the wax dry. Next I placed my pieces edges into the buffer at an angle but only going halfway down the piece.
Learning about the various pieces of equipment has helped me complete my project on time and now I know how to work the machines in the future. When I start my next project I will definitely ask which are the best machines to help me cut or bind my materials together because the experience of them will help me in future projects and it will aid me with my current project.
I found plastic a very versatile material to use and it is very adaptable and effective. But I would like to venture into wood next project because I want to learn a variety of skills with different materials but because I want to keep each project lively and interesting for me personally, I enjoy challenging myself.
The project was a challenge to me as I have never built something from scratch out of just acrylic, but with the help of the teaching staff and the machinery I think I have produced a practical, useful and modern looking piece of work.
I would have liked to make my design a bit more complicated because I finished it well within time. What I would have done is put to boxes at either side of my project to store treasury tags and paperclips. I think that would have just rounded the project off and it would then be able to store all types of stationary.
